What to expect
Early pregnancy can feel both exciting and fragile, and it is completely normal to have a lot of questions and worries. Visits are short and focused so you are not spending extra time in the clinic, but you still get clear, thorough updates. I review your results quickly, explain what they mean in plain language, and walk you through what to expect week by week so you are not left guessing between visits. There is always time for your questions, and together we adjust the plan if anything changes.
Early Pregnancy Monitoring Frequently Asked Questions
When is the first ultrasound?
Often at 6 to 7 weeks based on the first day of your last period. I sometimes scan earlier if there is concern for ectopic pregnancy or if labs suggest it is needed. Early ultrasounds help confirm the location of the pregnancy, dating, and early cardiac activity when present.
When do I move to OB care?
Usually at 8 to 10 weeks once dating is established and early development looks appropriate. I provide a warm handoff to your chosen OB or midwife and share your records so the transition feels seamless.
What if I have bleeding?
Call me. Light spotting can be common, but I want to know what you are experiencing. I will guide next steps, which may include labs and an ultrasound. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, dizziness, or fainting, seek urgent care or call emergency services.
How often will I have labs or ultrasounds?
Monitoring is individualized. Many patients have 1 to 3 blood tests (such as hCG) and 1 to 2 ultrasounds through 8 to 10 weeks. I keep visits purposeful and aligned to your needs.
Can the first visit be virtual?
Yes. I can review symptoms and prior results by telehealth and schedule labs or an in-person ultrasound as needed.
What if I am Rh negative and have bleeding?
Please tell me. You may need an Rh immune globulin injection depending on the timing and amount of bleeding. I will coordinate the appropriate care.
Who should I contact after hours?
If you have concerning symptoms after hours, follow the instructions I provide at your visit for urgent questions. For emergencies such as heavy bleeding or severe pain, go to the nearest emergency department or call emergency services.
