HyFoSy Tubal Patency Test Frequently Asked Questions

Is HyFoSy painful?

Most patients report mild cramping that eases within minutes. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever beforehand if that is safe for you.

How is HyFoSy different from HSG?

HyFoSy uses ultrasound and a gentle foam contrast to check if the tubes are open. HSG uses X-ray and an iodine dye. HyFoSy avoids radiation and iodine and is often better tolerated.

When in my cycle is best?

Early in the cycle after bleeding stops and before ovulation. We will confirm the exact dates based on your cycle length and recent period.

Can I do HyFoSy if I am allergic to iodine?

Yes. HyFoSy does not use iodine dye, which makes it a good option for patients with iodine allergies.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure itself usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. Plan for a 15 to 30 minute visit including check-in and immediate review of results.

How do I prepare?

Eat and hydrate normally. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 to 60 minutes before if you wish. Avoid intercourse after your period until after the test so we can be sure you are not pregnant. We will give you clear pre-visit instructions.

Are there side effects or risks?

Temporary cramping or light spotting can occur. Infection is rare. Contact us if you develop fever, increasing pain, or heavy bleeding after the test.

Can I drive myself and go back to work?

Yes. Most patients drive themselves and return to normal activities the same day.

Will I get the results right away?

Yes. We discuss what we see during the visit and explain what it means for your plan. Any follow-up steps are outlined before you leave.

Does HyFoSy improve fertility?

Some patients notice a short-term increase in natural conception rates after a tubal patency test. We will explain what that might mean for your timing and next steps.

Is HyFoSy covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan. We are in network with several commercial insurers and provide superbills for out-of-network claims. Self-pay pricing is available on request.

Who should not have HyFoSy?

We avoid HyFoSy if there is a possible pregnancy, active pelvic infection, or heavy bleeding. We will review your history to make sure the test is appropriate.

What happens next if a tube looks blocked?

We will discuss targeted next steps, which may include repeat imaging, additional evaluation, or adjusting your treatment plan. You will leave with a clear path forward.
